October 2002 Newsletter
We have really struggled to get a newsletter to you this month! As you know, we were not at Alan's talk In October, as we were celebrating a very special birthday for Yve by going to China.

Harry Hopkins (of the Gloucester Strut) managed to find a resumé of the talk Alan gave some time ago but, without the diagrams that he has not been able to send, it doesn't really do justice to what we have heard was a very enjoyable and informative evening. Sorry about that, but we did try hard.

No-one has sent any items for inclusion either this time I am sure you are beginning to realise why we struggled over this newsletter!!

However, we do have some information about this Thursday's speaker, John Bally.

John is the owner of the excellent scenic farm strip at Painscastle, about five miles due north of Hay-on-Wye.

For those of you who do not know him, I should explain that John is a long time glider pilot, the owner of the Stemme motor glider that many of you will have seen at Shobdon and the local area. He currently makes his living deer farming, though over the years has been involved in selling boats in Scandinavia, is a qualified sea captain and ran a restaurant.

He has ridden off-road motorcycles, been the CFI at the Talgarth Gliding Club, is a BGA inspector and some years ago competed in the world gliding championships, flying a Nimbus.

John will be bringing some videos and talking about his exploits gliding in South Africa and mountain flying in the Pyrenees. Don't miss this opportunity of hearing about John's action-packed life: it promises to be a good talk. We look forward to seeing you all on Thursday, 14th November at 1930.
