We were delighted at the number of people attending the meeting held at
Shobdon on September 5th, in response to our letter and local advertising.
It was unanimously decided at that meeting to form a local PFA strut, to be
known as Shobdon Strut. It was also agreed we should meet once a month in
the Clubhouse belonging to Herefordshire Aero Club at 7.30 pm on the second
Thursday. We hope to see as many of you as possible. People present felt that there should be some organising structure to the strut, as clubs can 'fall apart' without it, and so Robin James was elected chairman, David Johnstone secretary and Keith Challinor as treasurer. Two other members, Keith Morris and Peter Phillips were elected as committee members. No member is expected to give more than two years' service to the Strut as a committee member. However, members overwhelmingly felt they wanted a relaxed meeting and did not want to become overburdened with formal business. Ideas were floated and it was decided visiting speakers would come from time-to-time and suggested topics were strip flying, fly-aways and mini-competitions, such as Castles in Wales. Any ideas for this would be welcome - please get in touch and let us know what you would like. Several people present on September 5th have already offered their services. On October 10th, Alan Newton will get the strut off to a good start with a talk about making propellers. As many of you know, we have run several Young Eagles days here at Shobdon, up until now under the auspices of the Gloucester Strut. Several local schools have benefited from this activity and the last occasion was for 151 Squadron ATC from Leominster. Now we will be able to run them ourselves and would welcome any help you may be able to give for these events. |
Below is a list of events already organised. Other months are being arranged but if you can offer to give a talk, or know someone who could, please get in touch. October 10th: Alan Newton - Making Propellers November 14th: John Bally December 12th: Christmas Party - further details in the next newsletter. January 9th: Robin James - slide show and talk February 13th: Aircraft Builders Evening At the time of writing, we have 24 paid up members. If you haven't yet decided, why not come along to our next meeting and find out what the Strut is all about? We are a friendly group and flying is our passion. People who have joined are from all levels of experience of flying - some with none at all but a great interest in the subject, others with much skill and knowledge but the Strut is a place where like-minded people can meet and discuss their favourite topic. It is also an opportunity to talk over problems or seek help with a project you are undertaking. It is not merely for pilots. So, come along on October 10th (or any other second Thursday of the month, if you cannot manage that night): you will be sure of a warm welcome. Items for the newsletter are always welcome. They can be flights you have made to interesting places, for example, or pictures of aircraft - in short, anything you think would be of interest to other members. Next month, neither Robin nor I will be at the meeting, so please send items to me for inclusion for October's copy. Finally, we have to thank Jasper Fforde for allowing us to use his domain for the newsletter and for designing the website. The comments received so far have all appreciated his efforts: thank you very much, Jasper. Yve James |
